About the Position

The Research Analyst supports research-for-development projects on forest conservation, forest and landscape restoration, and rural development in Southeast Asia. Working in close collaboration with Alliance Scientists and partners in Malaysia and beyond, the incumbent conducts desk and field research, performs data analysis, and contributes to producing project outputs, as well as assisting in project coordination. The Research analyst has an opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative decision-support and monitoring tools for forest conservation and restoration.

The Research analyst will deliver quality data and other research outputs in a timely manner to meet the beneficiary needs and the expectations of research and funding partners.

The successful candidate has key responsibilities in the following areas:

  • Primary and secondary data collection on tree species distributions, biology, uses, threats, conservation and restoration activities and other topics related to project implementation;
  • Spatial analysis of biodiversity data;
  • Analysis of other quantitative and qualitative data from global and national databases, field surveys and stakeholder interviews;
  • Contribution to scientific publications;
  • Contribution to the preparation of other project documents, reports and communication materials;
  • Providing support to organize and document project workshops and meetings;
  • Providing support to coordinate the activities of a regional network of forest and tree genetic diversity (Asia-Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme).

Requirements

This job might be for you if you have the below skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Biology, Ecology or other related fields.
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant working experience in environmental research or management.
  • Knowledge of R programming language (or other similar languages e.g. Python).
  • Good command of English, written and oral communication skills.
  • Fluency in Malay.
  • Familiarity with forest conservation issues in South and Southeast Asian countries.
  • Initiative, independence and maturity to work effectively with people of different backgrounds.

Desirables

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of spatial analysis methods and software.
  • Interdisciplinary background.
  • Knowledge of other Asian languages.

Benefits

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position and WorldFish offers a competitive remuneration package including comprehensive benefits (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, employer provident fund contribution, paid leave, and others. The duration of the contract will initially be for a two-year period with possibility for extension, depending on funding and performance.

Location: The post holder will be home-based in Malaysia. This position requires regular face-to-face meetings with project implementation team in Kuala Lumpur area and also requires travel in other Asian countries.
